Aina Tensy Nelson, 103, Sturgeon Bay, passed away on July 5, 2009, at Whispering Pines. She was born May 20, 1906, in Sweden to Valfrid and Vilhelmina Petersson. Aina came to America as a young woman and worked in the Chicago area as a domestic employee for a number of years. She later attended nursing school and worked as a nurse in various capacities throughout her life. She married Knut William Nelson in Chicago in 1935; he preceded her in death on July 17, 1990. She and her husband moved to Door County in 1945 and purchased the Sylvan Lodge on Bay Shore Drive. They operated the lodge as a hostel for many years while Aina worked as a nurse. In 2001 she sold the lodge and moved to Big Hill Regency. Aina was a member of the Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church.


Survivors include one daughter-in-law, Patricia Nelson, Appleton; one grandson, Erik (Deanna) Nelson, Hudson, Wis.; two great-granddaughters, Alexandria and Molly Nelson; long time friends, Suzanne Derby and Thomas Derby.

Aina was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Walter William Nelson; brothers and sisters.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at the Sturgeon Bay Moravian Church. Burial will be in Bayside Cemetery. Forbes Funeral Home is assisting the family.
