Son of Albert Bender and Mrs. Guy Dooley. He graduated from Bloomington High School in 1941 and was a state champion wrestler. He worked in a defense plant in Indianapolis before he entered the service in 1943. He took his basic training at Camp Toccoa, GA and at Camp Mackall, NC and was sent overseas in May 1944. He was a paratrooper and was killed in action in Germany. He was married to Betty Bell Bender and his last letter, written January 20, 1945 was received the same day the death notice telegram came.
