Services for William L. Terry, 83, Rapid City, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Campbell, Paula & Quinn Funeral Home.

A memorial will be established. The family requests no flowers be sent.

Terry died Friday at a Rapid City nursing home.

He was born Sept. 24, 1907, at Marion, Ky., and attended school in Crittenden County, Ky. He also received a bachelor's degree from Western Kentucky University, a master's degree from Indiana University and a Ph.D. from Columbia University in New York City.

On June 12, 1929, he married Anne May at Owensboro, Ky. He lived and worked at Bowling Green, Ky., and, during World War II, at various Navy preflight bases. He was also director of athletics at Western Kentucky University and from 1946 to 1974 was division chairman and football coach at San Diego (Calif.) State University.

He was also a graduate assistant at Columbia University and a visiting professor at the universities of Kentucky, Minnesota, Colorado and Washington.

At San Diego State, Terry received numerous certificates and honors for his leadership in education. The swimming and athletics complex at San Diego State was named for him.

He was active in Audubon Society and Kiwanis Club activities at San Diego and served with various sports associations and fraternities.

Retired, he moved to Rapid City in 1985. Here he was active in the Golden Boys Kiwanis Club, was past president of the West Hills Village residents council and pursued interests in gardening, history and sports.

Surviving are his wife; a daughter; one brother; and two sisters.

He was preceded in death by one sister.
