LASKER - Mr. Alphus "Shorty" Doughtie, age 73, died on Saturday, August 7, 2004, at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC.

For the last few days, Shorty was surrounded by his family and friends. He was a native of Hertford County and served a tour of duty with the United States Army. Shorty was a member of the Gallery Theater in Ahoskie and worked with stage lighting for the productions. He was very active in the Ahoskie Community working with the Ahoskie High School Athletic Association. He was a member of the American Legion and supported the American Legion Baseball Organization.

Shorty was also a member of the Lions Club. He worked for White and Woodley in Ahoskie as an electrician until 1971. Shorty and Linda moved to Lasker, NC in 1991. He worked at Bertie High School where he taught Residential House Wiring until 1993. Shorty had the honor of teaching several students who finished first and second in the North Carolina State VICCA Competition. Following his work with the school system, Shorty began work with Rich and Rich Auctioneers in Lasker, NC, as the office manager. Shorty enjoyed a marriage of thirty years to Linda, and was a dedicated son-in-law to her mother, Mae Collier. Shorty treasured his relationship with his niece and nephews treating them all as his own children. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife, Linda C. Doughtie; one son, Tony M. Doughtie and his wife, Pat of Rocky Mount, NC; one niece, Mary Ann Barnes and her husband, Tim of Raleigh, NC; two nephews, Robert Doughtie and his wife, Betty of Cary, NC and Mike Doughtie and his wife, Susan of Suffolk, VA; four grandchildren, Brooks, Amy and Morgan Doughtie and Stephanie Musante, one great-granddaughter, Madison Musante; four great nieces, Allison Barnes, Melissa Denoo, Ashley and Lauren Doughtie, one great nephew, Chris Doughtie. Also surviving is a very special friend Nancy Doughtie of Rocky Mount, NC.

Memorial services will be conducted on Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at 11 a.m. at New Hope United Methodist Church in Lasker, NC with the Rev. Paul Lee officiating. The burial will follow at the Lasker Cemetery in Lasker, NC.

The family received friends at Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square, NC, on Monday evening from 7 until 8:30 p.m.
