Wood enlisted on September 9, 1941, and attended MCRD San Diego for boot training. After graduation, he attended Sea School and was posted to the Marine Barracks at Pearl Harbor in January, 1942.

Private Wood was assigned to the Marine detachment of the USS Astoria in April 1942. For a teenager barely out of training, Wood was quickly initiated into life aboard a ship at war; he participated in the battles of the Coral Sea and Midway before sailing for Guadalcanal in August, 1942. Wood was killed when the Astoria was sunk off Guadalcanal during the battle of Savo Island on August 9, 1942. His remains were never found.
