James was the only child of John E. Shannon, a railroad electrician, and Mary A. 'Mamie' Dever Shannon.

Tragically, he died at 9 months of age from Cholera Infantum. He lived in Lambertville for all of his short life.

James was probably buried in Saint John's Cemetery, Lambertville, Hunterdon Co., New Jersey with his mother's family.
