BOW VALLEY - Damian D. Arens, 64, died Jan. 1, 1999, at McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D. A rosary was Jan. 4 at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington. Later that evening, a vigil service was held at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Bow Valley. Funeral services were Jan. 5 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church
with Rev. Mark Tomasiewicz officiating. Burial was in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Bow Valley. Pallbearers were David Arens, Steve Uhing, Jason Arens, Kevin Schmidt, David Pavelka and Virgil Pavelka. Damian was born Feb. 19, 1934, to Anthony (TJ) and Margaret (Sudbeck) Arens. He married Helen E. Pavelka April 18, 1956, in Verdigre. After their marriage, he and Helen lived in the Crofton area from 1956-1961. They moved to the Bow Valley area where they lived and farmed. He also worked on the construction of the Gavins Point Dam project. Damian was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Bow Valley. Survivors include his wife, Helen, Hartington; eight children and their spouses, Chuck A. and Mary Lynn Arens, Hartington; Donna and Danny Heimes, Hartington; Norma and Dan Thoene, Fordyce; Bette and Michael
Hamilton, Madison; Delores and Greg Johnson, Verdigre; Ronald Arens, Hartington; Roger Arens, Hartington; and Joan F. Arens, Plano, Texas; eight grandchildren; four sisters and their husbands, Lorraine Schmidt, St. Helena; Evelyn Koch, Crofton; Janita and; Robert Uhing, Niobrara; Delores and Charles Arens, Crofton; three brothers and their wives, Gerald and Lucille Arens, Crofton; Dennis and Mary Frances Arens, Hartington; Kenneth and Ruth Arens, Hartington; and a sister-in-law, Rita Arelis, Fordyce. He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandchildren, Heather and Christopher Heimes; and one brother, Jerome Arens.
