Lucy Vincent Collins (née French) Cowlishaw, born on 24 January 1842, at Banbury in Oxford and Northampshire County, England – died on 23 October 1919, at Dunkerton, Black Hawk County, Iowa. She was buried in Fairbank in Buchannan County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Edmund French (1803-1883) his wife, Anne (née Humphries) French (1804-1888).
In April 1842, Lucy's father, Edmund, left his family in England and voyaged to New York where he worked as a cobbler in New York City until he had enough money to send for his family. They arrived in New York in 9 February 1846, aboard the Quebec. The following spring they moved west to Trumbull County, Ohio. In the Fall of 1855, Edmund journeyed west to Black Hawk County where he bought some land in Lester Township and worked the property establishing a farm for the next year. In the following Fall of 1856, he returned to Ohio and moved his family to their new home on the farm in Black Hawk County, Iowa.
Lucy married in Black Hawk County, Iowa on 15 December 1858, Joseph Henry Cowlishaw, Sr., (1830-1896), a successful farmer near Dunkerton.
He and Lucy were the parents of the following children: Elizabeth "Bessie" (née Cowlishaw) Magee, Yeomans Newton Cowlishaw, Mary Cowlishaw, Harry J. Cowlishaw, Hatie Gertrude "Gertie" (née Cowlishaw) Gallup, Joseph "Joe" Henry Cowlishaw Jr., and Marcus "Mart" James Cowlishaw.
