Thank you for the following information Ron:

Mr. White was born near Bolivar, TN.

His parents died while he was very young and he was adopted by a wealthy family there. During the Civil War, Mr. White was a courier for the Confederates, taking important messages from camp to camp. He witnessed the Battle of Shiloh.

For a short time when he was a young man, he worked in Memphis and recalled it as a little town with but a few stores.

He farmed the rest of his life near Ripley.

Mr. White was known by all the folks for miles around as "Uncle Joe". He wore glasses for many years, but had long discarded them. He spent several hours each day reading the Bible. Until the summer of 1939 he walked
several miles to church every Sunday. Though he was a Baptist, he attended nearly all denominations, believing it is not the church but the way you live that counts.

He also thought that a walk of a mile and half to the store and back a day to get a soft drink was good for him.

He was married at the age of 45 to Miss Mary Catherine Curtis, then 16.

Mrs. White died 3 years before him.

They had 7 children. Joe White Jr., W.J. White, John and Emmett White, Mrs. W.A. Ford, Mrs. W.V. Chalk, and Mrs. Sephus Layne.
