Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Topeka Bible Church for Richard W. Holmes, 76, Topeka, who died Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, at home. He was chief justice of the Kansas Supreme Court before he retired in 1995.

He was born Feb. 23, 1923, in Wichita, to Winn E. and Sidney Clapp Holmes, and attended Wichita public schools. He received a BS degree in business administration with honors from Kansas State University in Manhattan in 1950. He received a juris doctorate magna cum laude from the Washburn University School of Law in 1953.

He was an attorney in private practice in Wichita from 1953 to 1977. He was an adjunct instructor of business law at Wichita State University in 1958 and was a Wichita municipal judge from 1959 to 1961. He was admitted to practice before the Kansas Supreme Court, U.S. District Court and U.S. Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Mr. Holmes was a justice on the Kansas Supreme Court from 1977 to 1990 and chief justice from 1990 to 1995. He received the degree of Honorary Doctor of Laws from Washburn University in 1991.

He was chairman of the Kansas Judicial Council from 1988 to 1990, a member of the Coordinating Council for Criminal Justice from 1990 to 1992 and a member of the Conference of Chief Justices from 1990 to 1995.

He received the Kansas Bar Association's Outstanding Service Award in 1988 and it's Professionalism Award in 1999. He had received the Wichita Bar Association's President's Certificate of Appreciation in 1975-76.

Mr. Holmes had served as counsel to the law firm of Goodell, Stratton, Edmonds and Palmer in Topeka since 1995.

He served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946 and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.

He was a founding member of the American Judges Association in 1959 and served eight years on it's board of governors and two terms as a member of the group's executive committee. He received the association's Award of Merit for Outstanding Contribution to the Judiciary in 1992. He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and several honorary Greek letter societies.

He married Gwendolyn Sand Aug. 19, 1950, in Niagara Falls, N.Y. She survives.

Other survivors include sons, Dr. Robert W. Holmes, Topeka, and David K. Holmes, Wichita; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Central Christian Church in Wichita. Visitation will follow.

Burial will be in Resthaven Gardens of Memory in Wichita.

Visitation also will follow Topeka memorial services.
