Lt Doherty was Killed in Action during World War 2, while serving with the 41st Field Artillery Battalion of the 3rd Infantry Division. The year before, his older brother, Capt John Edmund Doherty, was also Killed in Action while serving in the 41st. Both brothers were from the La Canada area, when they enlisted into the army. Lt Doherty was awarded a Bronze Star with Oakleaf Cluster and a Purple Heart Lt Doherty & his brother are both buried at the Lorraine American Cemetery in St Alvold France.
