From family legend & other records: As a small child, Alexander witnessed the burning of Washington, DC by the British during the War of 1812. The family lived in Georgetown, Washington, DC. In 1850, occup. listed as Agent & Attorney; 1860, as Claim Agent; in 1861, he's listed in the 4th Auditor's office, Federal Gov'n, Wash., DC; in 1870 occup. listed as Civil Engineer.

His surname is variously given as the originally family spelling of MECHLING, and MECHLIN.
