Mr. Ables was retired from the State of Mississippi Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. A native of Attala County, he was born Feb. 9, 1931, to the late Carl and Mary Jenkins Ables. He graduated from Kosciusko High School, where he was a member of the 1949 championship football team.
He attended Holmes Junior College, where he continued his football career, winning the 1950 State Championship. He received a bachelor of science degree from Northwestern State College in Natchitoches, La., where he won All-Conference and Most Valuable Player awards in 1953. He was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame at Holmes Junior College in 1996. He received his master's degree from Mississippi State University in 1967. He taught schools in North Carrollton, Kosciusko and Greenwood.
Mr. Ables was an ordained deacon at North Greenwood Baptist Church, where he was active in the Friendship Sunday School Class and the L.L.L. group.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Cephus Ables and Allen Ables.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Robertson Ables of Greenwood; a daughter, Wanda Bailey of Brandon; a son, Jerry Ables and his wife, Debbie, of Greenwood; four sisters, Irene Hollingsworth of Byram, Lois Lee of Sevierville, Tenn., Peggy Taylor and her husband, Alton, of Kosciusko, and Barbara Page and her husband, Algernon, of Fannin; one brother, Carlton Ables and his wife, Doris, of North Carrollton; and five grandchildren, Allison Hurley of Jackson, Katy Barrett of Brandon and Leigh Ables, Robert Ables and Andrew Ables, all of Greenwood.
Dr. Jim Phillips and the Rev. Bob Hatzfeld will officiate at the services.
Burial will be at 4 p.m. today in Parkway Cemetery in Kosciusko.
Pallbearers will be Ben Strain, Knox James, Shelton Allen, Cecil Griffin, Jack Rose, Billy Moore, Gary McDonald and George Ricks.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Friendship Sunday School class at North Greenwood Baptist Church.
Visitation will be from noon until the time of the services today at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the North Greenwood Baptist Church Forward by Faith Fund.
