An early account of Selbu immigrants in America indicates Christian was born in Land, Oppland, Norway and there is, indeed, a Christian Hansen born there on 15 May but in 1836, not 1837. According to the 1900 census, he immigrated from Norway in 1856 and in 1860 arrived in the area now Gayville in Yankton County, one of the first Norwegians to settle there. Christian was living in Brule Creek, Dakota Territory in 1870 when he met and married Carrie Serum. They had a farm on the James River near Yankton and their first child, Hattie Ann, was born there. They sold the farm and moved in 1875 to Norman County, Minnesota where they had four more children born on their farm near Shelly.

Carrie died in 1886 at age 42. A few years later Christian married a second time on 18 Aug 1888 in Norman County to Malene Hauge (also known as Mallin or Mallina). Mallin died in 1891 at age 27, days after delivering their one child, Millard Clarence Brurud.
