PFC, 101st Infantry, 26th "Yankee" Division, Co. M
Served in the U.S. Army during World War I with the Yankee Division. 101st Infantry 26th Division Co. M 16th Reg. Machine Gun Co. He was wounded in action on 5-31-1918, 10-28-1918 and the last time one-half hour before the Armistice, November 11, 1918 at Hill 212 in Meuse Argonne, France and subsequently spent a year in the hospital recovering from his wounds. He served in Champagne-Marne, Cantigny, Ainse-Marne, St Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, Defensive Sector. He served in Columbus, New Mexico with the 17th US Cavalry and Ft Bliss, El Paso, Texas. He was awarded the Purple Heart w/2 OLC (1932), French Croix de Guerre, WWI Victory Medal, Mexican Service Medal. He was recommended for (but did not receive) the Distinguished Service Cross as reported in the Brockton Enterprise newspaper (MA).
He worked as an electrician after the war and my father told me that he had to sleep in a chair quite a bit due to the injuries received from gassing during the war. He died at the Chelsea Naval Hospital a direct result of the wounds he had received during the war.
