He was the oldest child of Isaac Smith and his wife Roxa Morton. He was called into service in the Army in 1814 at the age of 20, but because both of his parents were dead and he was left with the care of his siblings, his younger brother Rodney B. Smith took his place. He married Bulah Blodgett October 19, 1815 in Buffalo, Erie, New York. She died in 1838. He married second Candace Livermore.
