"100 Busy Years For Me"
These were the words of Mary Strobel when she celebrated her 100th birthday.
Mary was the oldest of 7 children. Her mother died when she was 13, and the children were scattered amoung the relatives. At 16 she told her father, "Bring the family together and I will help you raise them and never marry". Her father later owned a wagon shop in Lomira, where they lived on the second floor. "Our home was a gathering place for the neighborhood", she said, and "when we decided to move to Milwaukee, there were many tears in Lomira".
For many years Mary was a milliner for Chapmans and Smartwear. Retired, she lived with her two sisters Gertrude and Amanda.
Mary turned 102 in Feb of 1984 and was named the resident of the month at Lakewood Care Center where she shared a room with her sister Gertie.
"Sweets", listening to music, and visiting with Gertie and other friends is what Mary enjoyed the most.
