He is the son of Morris Smith Miller,II and Jane Octavia Macomb Miller. Alexander attended USMA from which he graduated in June 1865, 3rd in his class. He married Anna Grant Wilson, daughter of William Siebel Wilson on June 11, 1868 in Tarrytown, NY. Her father was the son of William Wilson and Ann Macomb, daughter of Gen A. Macomb.

Anna died in Pittsburg in 1906 and is buried in Utica, NY. Grandfather Morris Smith Miller, Sr. is buried in Albany Rural Cemetery.
