Fordham was born in North Carolina (possibly in Jonesboro)and was married first to Elizabeth Rollins, who died in 1854. Fordham and Elizabeth left North Carolina after 1830 and were in Madison Co., TN by the time of the 1840 census. After the death of Elizabeth, he married Margaret C. Climer on 26 Feb 1856 in Gibson Co., TN. They lived according to one newspaper source "10 miles east of Jackson" in Madison County.

Even though the date of his death is inscribed as Jan 1, 1872, at least two newspaper sources of the day report his death as July 2, 1872. (See both WHIG and TRIBUNE sources from Madison Co., TN.)

Fordham was instrumental in establishing Bethany Church, which would later become Brown's Church. He and a few other men were given the land for the church in 1859. One source said that he was a "class leader in the Methodist Church for 35 years."
