Antje "Annie" Cathriene Thode, daughter of Johann and Anna Margarethe Ahrensdorf Thode, was born July 2(3), 1833 in Pahlen, Norderdithmarschen, Germany to Johann and Anna Margarethe Ahrensdorf Thode. She was one of five children, three older and one younger brothers: Christian, Friedrich, Johann and Detlef Thode.
Annie married Peter Heinrich Claussen of Holstein, Germany on June 7, 1859. Two sons were born in Linden, Germany where Peter was a tailor. They are Claus Johann born November 1, 1859 and Karsten Hinrich (or Peter Henry) born on November 14, 1864.
On June 10, 1855 Peter, Annie and their two sons left Hamburg, Germany for New York aboard the steamer Borussia. Their first destination was Davenport, Iowa.
In 1870 they came to Tama County, Iowa by team and wagon, bringing their cow and possessions to a rented farm near Gladbrook, Iowa. Their house was in the middle of a large grove and had a straw roof. The animals were sheltered in a section of the building too. At times the chimney would catch the roof on fire so it was often necessary to rebuild the roof and even part of the main structure.
Then in 1884, Peter purchased a 160-acre farm in Vienna Township, Marshall County, Iowa where his son Claus John remained until he died November 29, 1938. This farm was given to Claus John by his father while also giving another farm of equal acres to the younger son, Peter Henry. On February 14, 1913, Peter Henry and wife sold their farm to Marx Delfs and moved to Gladbrook. In 1918 Claus Johann built a new brick home on his farm and, not to be outdone by his brother, Peter Henry built a beautiful home for his family in Gladbrook on the spot now identified as 612 6th Street.
Annie Claussen died at her Marshall County farm on December 24, 1887 and is buried in Badger Hill Cemetery near Gladbrook, Iowa.
Because of losing his mother at Christmas, Claus Johann never wanted to celebrate it again, even after having children of his own.
Peter Henry lived with his son, Peter Henry and his family until his death on June 23, 1914 at the age of ninety years.
It was noted in his obituary that he served his country, Germany, well in battle during the War of 1848. Peter Henry is also buried in the Badger Hill Cemetery.
