Grand Island Independent (Nebraska), Weds., 26 Aug 1898, p. 4:
We have to record today the death of another old veteran, which makes the second within a week. At noon Peter Plant, formerly of the 11th Regt., Vermont 1st artillery, died at the soldiers’ home hospital, of general disability, aged 71 years. He was admitted to the home Nov. 23d, 1891, from Columbus, and has resided here ever since. He was of kind disposition and upright character. The remains will be buried tomorrow afternoon in the home cemetery with the usual ceremony.
Same issue, another column:
The funeral of Peter Plant, the old veteran who died at the soldiers’ home Saturday, was held in the home chapel yesterday afternoon and was largely attended. Father Wolf of the Catholic church conducted the service and delivered an appropriate sermon.
