Spc Neff was assigned to the 4th Engineer Battalion, Fort Carson, Colorado. He died of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Randy graduated in 2006 from Blackfoot High School in Blackfoot, Idaho. He was easy going and laid back in school with a sense of humor that put people in a good mood. On June 22, 2006, he joined the Army and it changed his life by helping him overcome hardships he faced growing up. Randy served in Iraq from February 2009 to April 2009 at which time he was transferred to Afghanistan. As a combat engineer, his job was to help clear roadside bombs from the roads. Equipped with armored trucks, they roam roads ahead of supply and combat convoys, seeking out bombs that others avoid so they can be detonated safely. He would also act as bodyguard for commanders when they ventured off the base. During his three years in the Army, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon. Randy turned out to be a godsend to his group. He had the ability to lift spirits and make his comrades laugh til they hurt. With the dangerous job he and his fellow soldiers have, laughter was important. He would start out flashing his trademark grin and make everyone feel better. He was a dedicated soldier and devoted husband to Madelyn. He liked hanging out with friends, building models and playing video games. There was no quit in Randy, he was strong-hearted and the first one ready to go when duty called.
