Isaac was the ninth of 4 children, and he was the second of the 6 sons of Isaac Read, III and Catherine Matthews. Isaac's was born and raised on his parents farm in Walnut Valley. He married Margaret Ann Fonger on 26 May 1859 in Balirstown Township. By 1861, the couple had settled in Jacksonburg, where Isaac owned and operated a distillery. He made Read's Apple Jack (or hard cider) until prohibition forced the business to close. The distillery building still stands (it is the rental place on route 94) and Isaac's white frame house is still located across the street from the former distillery.
