Levi Fletcher Decker was born in Strauhegan, Maine, December 24, 1932. Died October 4, at his home in Jewell county, Kansas, where he had resided for 29 years. The deceased came west when 19 years of age settling in Wisconsin where he lived until the beginning of the Civil War. He enlisted Euclaire December 2, 1861, in company “L” of the second Wisconsin volunteer cavalry and was honorably discharged at Memphis, Tennessee on the 22nd day of January 1865. He was a prisoner of war from September 13, 1863, to March 21, 1864. After being mustered out of the service of his country he returned to Wisconsin where he was married at Appleton, Wisconsin, to Catherine A. Calhoun, who survives him. To this union four children were born, two sons and two daughters, all of whom were present at their father’s funeral. In 1879 he removed with his family to Kansas. Mr. Decker became a member of the Grand Army Post at Ionia in 1885 and was a member in good standing at the time of his death. He had served the state in a number of municipal offices being justice of the peace two terms and also a school officer at various times.
