GALENA, Ill. -- Francine Ruth "Fran" Byers, 84, left this earth to join her beloved Sam at 2:16 p.m. Monday, July 20, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

Private family graveside services will be Saturday, July 25, at Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 24, at Miller & Steinke Funeral Home, Galena.

She was born on Sept. 14, 1924, in Montezuma, Iowa, daughter of Robert and Neva (Kirby) Richards. At age 18, she boarded a train to Philadelphia to meet her childhood sweetheart, Sam, and they entered the union of marriage, which lovingly lasted for 64 years until Sam's death on April 30, 2007.

Fran and Sam were partners in every sense of the word as they worked side-by-side in the newspaper business, culminating with co-ownership of the Galena Gazette from 1962, until their retirement in 1985.

As hard as she worked with Sam to grow the business, nothing in the world was more important than their daughter, Pam, and grandsons, Jeff and Jake. She never missed an opportunity to cheer them on from the sidelines, and she delighted in the success of her family. Fran was a private and strong woman who truly enjoyed quiet conversations with her family and friends. Some of her most enjoyable evenings were spent at The Log Cabin and the Galena Elks Lodge. She was an avid Wisconsin Badgers, Green Bay Packers and New York Yankees Fan. For the past seven years, she adored being a hands-on grandma to her three great-grandchildren, soon to be four, always stocking her fridge with their favorite food and drinks and whipping up their favorite meal when they would frequently come to visit. Our lives are indelibly marked and vastly enhanced simply by her love.

She will be forever loved and missed by her son-in-law, Terry Miller, of Galena; grandsons, Jeff (Jodi) Zeal, of Lena, and Jake (Michelle) Zeal, of Dubuque; her great-grandchildren, Jenna Elizabeth, Jacob Andrew and Alexia Sam; brothers-in-law, Duane (Nancy) Lowe and Norval (Donna) Lowe; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She also was preceded in death by her daughter, Pam Miller; and her parents.
