PLYMOUTH - Mary M. Grossman, 86, Plymouth, passed away 11:35 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, 2009, in her son's residence in Kokomo. She was born January 23, 1923, in Bourbon, the daughter of the late Harvey E. and Ethel Irene (Markley) Yarian.

She married Therald W. Grossman at the Bourbon Parsonage on April 8, 1948. He preceded her in death on May 26, 1996, after 48 years of marriage.

She graduated from Bourbon High School in 1941. Mary retired in January 1988 as the financial secretary from Plymouth Community Schools. She was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star. One of her greatest enjoyments was volunteering. First United Methodist Church, Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center and the St. Joseph Health Center were the fortunate recipients of her time beginning in 1997. She received the 2006 Volunteer of the Year award by the Plymouth Area Chamber of Commerce, was recognized for the most volunteer hours and, in 2008, received an award at the Joey Awards by the Hospital Auxiliary. When she wasn't volunteering she could be found in the kitchen canning her many fruits and vegetables or fixing a batch of her famous fried chicken, cookies, or one of her many pies.

Surviving are her two children, James and wife, Janice Grossman, Kokomo, Susan and husband, Lawrence Duell, Lafayette; five grandchildren, Sara and husband, Kerry Maggard, Anderson, Travis and wife, Beth Duell, West Lafayette, Kristen and husband, Chad McDaniel, Frankton, Jenny Duell, Lafayette, Jamie Grossman and fiancé, Jason Taylor, Fishers; four great-granddaughters, Lauren Maggard, Whitney Duell, Emery Maggard and Mallory Duell; sister, Fern, and husband, Roger Nifong, Bremen; sister-in-law, LaVanch Yarian, Bremen; 10 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Willo Motz and Ruth Yarian, and a brother, Earl Yarian.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, July 25, 2009, in First United Methodist Church, 400 North Michigan Street, Plymouth, IN 46563. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time in the church. Doctor Dean Fager will be officiating. Burial will follow at New Oakhill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church or to VNS Hospice, 2800 South Reed Road #2, Kokomo, IN 46902. Arrangements were entrusted to Ellers Mortuary, Webster Street Chapel, Kokomo.
