Mrs. Inez Gillen Kautz, 86, a member of one of Wabash's pioneer families, died Saturday night in the home of her daughter, Mrs. K. H. Blacklidge, Kokomo, after being an invalid for more than three and half years.
Mrs. Kautz, the former wife of the late John Arthur Kautz, publisher of the Kokomo Tribune for many years, was a native of Wabash, the daughter of Dr. Henry H. and Mary (Cartmell) Gillen. She was a life member of the Christian church and attended Butler College Preparatory school. For many years while living in Kokomo she was active in the Chautauqua league and taught a Bible class in that organization.
Her marriage to Mr. Kautz occurred in 1886 and was dissolved in 1922. At that time she came to Wabash to live and resided here until her health failed about three years ago when she returned to Kokomo to reside with her daughter.
There are three daughters surviving: Mrs. Blacklidge, Mrs. J. D. Forrest, who lived in Wabash for a time, and Mrs. Robert J. Hamp Sr. Also surviving are one sister, Mrs. Effie McMonigal, Los Angeles, Calif., 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Kautz was one of six children of Dr. and Mrs. Gillen, four of whom preceded her in death. They were Dan M. Gillen, Wabash, Dr. Richard Gillen, Seattle, Wash., Mrs. J. W. G. Stewart and Mrs. Clara Summerland, Wabash. One daughter, Kathryn, also preceded her in death in 1920.
Private funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock in Mrs. Blacklidge's home where friends also may call. The body will be brought to Falls cemetery for burial in the Gillen family plot.
