John Samuel Batten, 90, of White Hall, Virginia, and Heritage Hall Health Care died Thursday, November 20, 2008, at Heritage Hall where he had made his home since June, 2005.

He was born in Albemarle County, September 12, 1918, to the late John Batten and Florence Walton Batten.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Hattie Frazier Batten; his brothers Vernon, Charles "Jack", Russell, William and a sister, Polly Gibson.

He is survived by two sons, Hollis S. Batten and his wife, Betty, of Buckingham County, Virginia, Robert Batten and his wife, Donna, of Earlysville, Virginia; a daughter, Florence Bruce and her husband, Pete, of White Hall, Virginia; five grandsons, Steve, Hollis Jr. "H.B.", John II, Chad and Stacey; two great-grandsons, Travis Batten and Sam Batten; one great-granddaughter, Linda Dawn; two step grand-children, Tammi Oliva and Brad Clore; one brother, Herbert Batten and his wife, Lilly, of Dyke, Virginia; one sister-in-law, Bobbi Cook and her husband, Bernard, of Waynesboro, Virginia; many nieces and nephews including special nieces, Paula D'Ambrosia of New York, Juanita Garrison and Dorothy McAllister and special nephews, Paul Walton, Claude Walton, James Thomas, Roy Batten and James Gibson.

He was devoted to his family and was a foster parent for numerous years to 38 foster children. He was a farmer for 25 years for Harry Clark until Mr. Clark's death and then continued many years as a farmer for Dr. Payne of Garth Road and Dr. Summey of Millington Road until his retirement. He also enjoyed many evenings helping his neighbors and his son Robert on his farm in Earlysville, Virginia before his illness. He leaves his beloved dog, Ranger in the care of his grandsons Stacey and Chad.

He was a member of Mt. Moriah United Methodist Church.

The family would like to thank the staff at Heritage Hall for their many years of devotion and care. A special thanks to Chrystal Dean, Linda Dickinson, Angela Dickerson, Bessie Earhart, Crystal Davis, Isiah Walker and Ernest Jones, Dana Shifflett and of course, Tina Rutt. Everyone at Heritage was special to our Dad and we thank you for your care through the years.

A funeral service were conducted Monday, November 24, 2008, at Moriah United Methodist Church with Pastor Chris McClain officiating. Interment followed at Mt. Moriah Cemetery.

The family received friends Sunday, November 23, 2008, at Teague Funeral Home.
