Robert O. Stokes, youngest of three children of Frank L. and Hannah Osborn Stokes, was born south of Inavale, Nebraska, December 9, 1900, and passed away July 26, 1975, at Mary Lanning Hospital at the age of 74.

He grew up on the family homestead farm and received his education at District No. 9 and the Red Cloud high school.

He was united in marriage to Bertha Whiteley on December 25, 1921, at the home of the bride's parents. To this union three children were born, Dallas, Marvel and Richard.

The family lived on a farm south of Red Cloud until moving into town in 1940, when he was manager of the Farmer's Union Oil Company. He also managed the Farmer's Union store, owned a small grocery in Bayard, Nebraska, served as Postmaster in Red Cloud and for the last 20 years was in the Real Estate and insurance business.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Richard, Bertha, his wife of 47 years, and his two brothers.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a forty year member of the Lion's Club, the Red Cloud Chamber of Commerce and Masonic Lodge No. 53.

He was married to Ethel Palmer at Mitchell, Nebraska on June 20, 1969, and made their home in Red Cloud.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel, son Dallas, daughter, Marvel (Mrs. Nathan Guy), stepson, Kenneth Palmer, stepdaughters, Darlene (Mrs. Charles Reiher) and Phyliis (Mrs. Stanley Offner) and families, eleven grandchildren, a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends.

The funeral was held Tuesday, July 29, from the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating.

Music was furnished by Mrs. Betty Rasser, organist.

Honorary Pallbearers were Lee Barcus, Ernest Yung, Emil Pavelka, Marvin Rocky, Albert Gregerson, George Moore, Clifford Phillips, Vernon Krueger, David Garwood, Laird Wolfe and Harold Miller.

Pallbearers were Elmer Stokes, Gene Stokes, Ivan Stokes, Leo Stokes, Vernon Stokes, Evert Stokes and Carl Stokes.
Interment was in the Red Cloud Cemetery with the Simonson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
