Charles E. Merrill was the son of Peter Merrill & Anne Cook. Born in 1841 in West Derby (now part of Newport), Vermont. He served in Co. L 11th Vermont Infantry during the Civil War. Captured at the Weldon Railroad 6/23/1864. Survived Andersonville. Paroled 11/20/64. Mustered out 5/13/65. Died 12/6/1909 after a long illness with Bright's Disease. Buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery at Medford, Massachusetts. Described in The Medford Mercury of 2/10/1909 as a Prominent Grand Army Man with a Splendid Record in War and Peace. Member of GAR Post #66 (S. C. Lawrence) in Medford. Granted an invalid pension in 1866. Mary (nee Marie Emma Cook) E. Merrill granted a widow's pension from Massachusetts in 1909.
