Monarch of Spain. Fourth son of the first marriage of King Philip V of Bourbon. Former Prince of Asturias, he succeeded his father (1746) who had renounced abdication following the death of the legitimate heir Louis in 1724. His court life was severely compromised by the intriguing influence of her stepmother Elisabetta Farnese who was however expelled from the Royal Palace when he ascended the throne. Ferdinand VI hardly ever intervened directly in internal and foreign politics, entrusting the care to the Marquis of Ensenada and the Secretary of State José de Carvajal y Lancaster who provided to maintain a form of neutrality such as to guarantee good economic and commercial stability. He died after a short but tormented illness aggravated by symptoms of acute paranoia , probably due to the death of his wife Maria Barbara of Braganza.
