John W. Kidwell, 91, of New Castle, died Wednesday at Stonebrooke Rehabilitation Centre.
John was born April 24, 1918 in Indianapolis, a son of the late William Kidwell and Clara Davis.

He graduated from the University of Oklahoma and began his military career in the U.S. Navy. He then served in the U.S. Army Air Corp and retired as a major in the U.S. Air Force. He served in both WWII and the Korean War during which he received a silver star for his heroism. John loved flying and tested experimental aircraft for the Air Force. He was an avid pilot until his death and for many years served as president of the local Airstream Club. He was an avid reader and knowledgeable in many areas.

He is survived by two sisters-in-law, Doris Stoddard of Franklin and Jean Fontinel of Victor, Iowa and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Sarah Mason Kidwell, on August 6, 2004; and a sister-in-law, Martha Scholl of Eaton, Ohio.

Friends may call from 3 – 7 p.m. Friday, June 26, 2009 at Sproles Family Funeral Home.

Private graveside services will be held in South Mound Cemetery West Lawn Addition.
