Son of Gjertrud Andersdatter Baatvik and Einar Larsen Bele Hakstad (1817-1871) who bought the Hakstad farm near Asskard, Norway in 1867. It is assumed they changed the family surname from Bele to Hakstad then, as it was common to take the name of the farm as your own name.

Original family name spelled Hakstad. Middle name Einorsen is after his father (the spelling his daughter-in-law used in the family tree compiled in the 1960s) It has been spelled differently elsewhere. In America, he was often called Louie instead of Lars.
