Tommima (various spelling) was born in Harray , Orkney, to Thomas Johnstone Of Quoykea & Charlotte Louttit of Nettletar.

Tommima married John Spence (1841-1887) of Runas and Jubadie in Harray on 22 Dec 1864.

John died in Harray on 15 June 1887 aged 45. After his death Tommima's mother, Charlotte Johnston, kept house for her so that she could do more outside work.
Her son William (later Rev), embarked on the 'Ionic' at Plymouth 20 Dec 1887, arriving 31 Dec 1887 in Auckland.
It was when Charlotte died that Tommima felt free to come to New Zealand. She was able to sell the farm, but after paying what was owed and her fares to New Zealand, she arrived around Jan 1896 with something like $20 in her pocket. Jane, Matthew, Helen and James all travelled to New Zealand. Daughter Tomima emigrated a little later with husband John Swanney & their 4 children

Tommima, lived in Franklin Road, Woodville in a cottage from which she sold fruit to supplement her pension. Her daughter Jane recalled that the cottage looked beautiful when there was blossom on the fruit trees.

Obituary
There passed away at her residence, Franklin road, Woodville, on Saturday, July 4, Mrs Tomina Spence, widow of the late Mr John Spence, at the age of 82 years.The late Mrs Spence was born at Pomona, Orkney Islands and came to NEw Zealand in 1896, taking up her residence in Woodville with her son, the Rev W. Spence, then Presbyterian minister there and after his transfer to Singleton, New South Wales, remaining in the town. She was very prominently identified with the Church, being the oldest member in Woodville. The deceased lady was buried on Tuesday, the Rev R. Gardner officiating. There were many floral tributes, one especially beautiful one being from the congregation of St David's Church.
The late Mrs Spence leaves a family of three daughters and four sons:- Mrs Swannay, Mangatainoka, Mrs Forrest, Woodville and Mrs McCristell, Johnsonville; Rev. W. Spence, Messrs Thomas, Cape Colony, Matthew, Trentham, and James of Woodville.
Mrs Spence's whole life was one of quiet, devoted to her family, the Church and to her neighbours and her passing has cast a gloom over the whole community
