Religious leader; Silver is considered the father of modern Israel among American Jewry. He was born Abraham Silver in Naumiestis, Lithuania and immigrated to the United States at age nine with his parents. In 1917 at the age of 24 Silver became Rabbi of the Cleveland, Ohio reformed congregation Tifereth Israel, known locally as "The Temple". Silver was one of the chief Zionist spokesmen appearing before the United Nations during the Palestine hearings of October 2, 1947, two weeks before Moshe Shertok made the case for Israel to the UN body on October 17, 1947. Silver was also chief adviser to President Harry S. Truman on the question of US support of an Israeli state, though their relationship was contentious at times. Delivered the inaugural prayer at the 1953 swearing in of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Named by Life Magazine as one of the ten most influential religious leaders in America in April 1953.
