A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of thirty-six in Harrisburg March 4, 1865, and mustered into federal service there March 10 as a private with the 74th Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. G. He deserted to date August 12, 1865, just seventeen days before the regiment mustered out, a move that later cost him.
On August 30, 1890, he applied for a disability pension but was refused due to the outstanding desertion charge. He tried again on June 22, 1907, and again was denied. He died at his daughter Sarah's home at the reported age of 84-10-12 from "apoplexy" leading to "exhaustion." Not surprisingly, his obituary in the Adams County Independent makes no mention of military service.
