She was born Sept. 20, 1922, in Black Hammer Township, Houston County, to Fred and Tena (Halvorson) Engelhart. Verna attended Spring Grove High School, where she was a cheerleader and played softball. She later earned her diploma from La Crosse Logan High School. On July 28, 1942, Verna married Arne Arneson in Minneapolis, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 27, 1995.
Verna had worked various jobs during her career, including the La Crosse Rubber Mills, the dairy store in La Crescent, and several years for Wettstein's Appliance in La Crosse. In 1964, the family moved from La Crosse to La Crescent, where they have resided since.
Verna was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in La Crosse, where she was very involved in quilt-making for missions and had recently completed her last quilt, which she made for her great-granddaughter. Verna was also an avid and accomplished bowler in her younger years, and along with her husband enjoyed aviation.
Verna is survived by a daughter, Marilyn Crary of Holmen, Wis.; a son, David (Linda) Arneson of Rochester; three grandchildren, Jason Crary of La Crosse, Amy Crary of Plymouth, Minn., and Joseph (Cyndi) Arneson of Falcon Heights, Minn.; a great-granddaughter, Audrey Dale Arneson of Falcon Heights; four brothers and sisters, Fern Trulson of Houston, Warren (Doris) Engelhart of La Crescent, Gloria Kanis of Golden Valley, Minn., and Gerald (Marian) Engelhart of La Crescent; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to her husband, Arne, she was preceded in death by a son, Paul "Butter" Arneson in 2007; three brothers, Ferd, Bernard and Lowell Engelhart; and two sisters, Muriel Benson and Lois Rogers.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 25, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 420 West Ave. S., La Crosse, with Rev. Tom Meyer officiating. Burial will take place in the Stone Church Cemetery, Houston. Friends and family may call on Saturday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services.
Memorials are preferred to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or an organization of choice.
