Served in the Confederate States Army, 1st NC Infantry, Co. E. Enlisted in Buncombe Co, NC, age 28, Apr. 24, 1861, for six months.
Parents: Frederick Thomas and Elizabeth (Smart) Burnett Jr. Husband of Dicia "Dicy" M. (Hamby) Burnett. Married: 3 JAN 1854.

In his 1929 sketch ("This Was My Valley", dealing with the pioneer family of Burnetts.), Fred M. Burnett, Sr. stated, "John was in the first battle of the war - the Battle of Big Bethel. He was just convalesing from an attack of typhoid fever when he enlisted for six months. He never fully recovered, and a relapse caused his death at Yorktown, VA. His companions buried him there, and when their enlistment was expired in Nov. 1861, they lovingly brought his body home for its final resting place."
