Mrs. E. M. Mitchell, 79, long prominent in the Amity community in Grant township before she and her husband retired in Reinbeck 20 years ago, and well known in Traer and Tama county, died suddenly at her home in Reinbeck Saturday morning of a heart ailment. She was stricken during the night Friday and passed away after a few hours illness. Mrs. Mitchell had returned home in Reinbeck only a few days before from Akron, Ohio. She and her husband having accompanied their son, Ted, and wife, to visit at the home of their son and brother, Peter, and family.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Amity church, conducted by the Rev. Clell W. Hickman, pastor of the Reinbeck United Presbyterian church, assisted by the Rev. James F. LeClere, Amity pastor. The main auditorium of the church was fill d to capacity, and there was only one vacant seat in the basement, which held the overflow. Marilyn Mitchell sang "The 23rd Psalm," and Warren, Frahm, "Beyond the Sunset," During the funeral service. Flowers were in charge of Mmes Robert Palmer, Friend Miller, Wendell Fleming and Harold Robertson, of Reinbeck. Russell Brubaker, Russell Lamb and John Morrow Jr. served as ushers. Casket bearers were Dale, Merle and Roger Strohbehn, Richard Mulder, J. W. Mitchell and Ralph Crawford. Burial was in Amity cemetery.
Mrs. Mitchell, of the pioneer Peter Whannel family of the Traer community, was born Mary Helen Whannel September 3, 1870, in Crystal township. She was the third daughter. She attended the rural school and Gladbrook high school and was a teacher in country schools for three years before marriage. She was married June 29, 1892, to Edward M. Mitchell, at the home of her parents by the Rev. J. M. Hamilton, Amity pastor. They farmed in the Amity community in Grant township forty years, moving to Reinbeck 20 years ago. Mrs. Mitchell and her husband were community leaders and useful citizens wherever they have lived. In the Amity community they were pillars of the church. Both were teachers of a Bible class many years. Both were active in the Farm Bureau. Ed developed a herd of cattle which produced many state and national champion individuals.
In Reinbeck after leaving the farm Mrs. Mitchell headed the Missionary society of the United Presbyterian church several years. She found time to write poetry, some of which has been published. Her husband served on the board of the Reinbeck Consolidated school 14 years, and during the time the new building was built. The Mitchells were the parents of seven children — Mrs. Jessie Strohbehn, of the Amity community; Mrs. J. J. Mulder, o f Reinbeck; Mrs. Ruth Fovall, Cedar Falls; William R. Mitchell, Grundy Center; Edward A. and Paul Mitchell, on the home farm in Grant township; and Peter, of Akron, Ohio. There are 21 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. With the exception of a small granddaughter, Mrs. Mitchell's death is the first in her family. Mrs. Mitchell also leaves two brothers, Samuel L., Whannel, of Traer, now with his daughter at Boone, Iowa, and Thomas, of Kimball, Minnesota; and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Houghton, of Tama, and Mrs. Jessie Houghton, of Mason City. Two sisters and a brother preceded her. The Mitchells celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in Reinbeck June 29, 1942, and would have reached their 58th anniversary had she lived until next Thursday.
