He served with the 1st New Jersey until February 28, 1862, when he was mustered out of the Volunteer service, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Regular Army. Assigned to the 4th United States Regular Light Artillery Regiment, he was brevetted 1st Lieutenant on July 30, 1862, promoted to full 1st Lieutenant on August 11, 1863, and then was brevetted Captain on May 12, 1864.

He was retired on June 6, 1900, and was promoted to Colonel on the Retired List on April 23, 1904.

A 1861 graduate of Princeton University, he was the son of Judge Richard Stockton Field, who served as a United States Senator from New Jersey during the war.

Excerpt from the 1879 work "History of Princeton and Its Institutions" (page 306) By John Frelinghuysen Hageman:

"LIEUT. EDWARD FIELD, son of Judge Field, first enlisted in the 1st N.J. Cavalry; then entered the regular army, and became attached to Gen. Hancock's Corps, and rendered distinguished artillery service under him, in the battles in front of Richmond. He continued in service through the war, and is still in the regular army."
