John Blocker and Abner Blocker were two of three brothers (Bill Blocker is the third) who were among Texas' most successful trail drivers. The Blocker family came to Texas in 1852 and settled near Austin. John started in the cattle business in Blanco County with his brother Bill, and Abner Blocker joined them there. Over the next two decades, the brothers trailed cattle to markets throughout the west. Their brand was an inverted numeral sever, and the Blockers developed a style of roping that became known as the Blocker Loop. Excellent accounts of the many trail-driving adventures of the Blocker brothers can be found in The Trail Drivers of Texas, by J. Marvin Hunter.
