Chief Pharmacist's Mate Boyer first joined the United States Navy in January of 1935 and was eventually honorably discharged at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in January of 1939. He then reenlisted in November of 1942 and was later again honorably discharged in October of 1945. He saw sea duty on the USS Brazos, USS Altair, USS Cyrene (AGP-13), USS Detroit and Motor Torpedo Boat (PT-18) of the 7th Fleet. He was awarded the Navy Good Conduct medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal with one bronze service star, the World War II Victory medal, the Philippine Liberation medal with one bronze service star, the Honorable Service Lapel Button, the Honorable Discharge Lapel Button and was authorized to wear the PT shoulder insignia.
