US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1857 and commenced the practice of law in Platteville, Wisconsin. He was elected district attorney of Grant County in 1860 and served as Captain of Company C, 7th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. After the war, he was elected the first Mayor of Lancaster and served as US District Attorney for the western district of Wisconsin, 1886 to 1890. In 1891, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second Congress, serving until 1893. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed legal practice until his death.
