Will Thompson was the youngest child of Malachi and Nellie Thompson. He was born on a pig farm near Hilliard, FL according to the 1900 Federal Census in January 1890 but that is not what is on his tombstone. After his mother became a widow, she lived with Will's family until her death. This was documented on his WWI draft registration card dated May 1, 1917. He was described as being slender, medium height with blond hair and blue eyes. Besides his mother, the card stated that he had a wife and children, yet by the Federal Census of 1920, William and his bride Nellie were living in St. Augustine without children. During the World War I, he served as a Quartermaster in the military police He was exposed to mustard gas causing many health problems in later years, and maybe an early death. He was buried in the National Cemetery in St. Augustine.

He married Nettie Dowling and had five children. The widow Nettie Thompson married Dorsey Lee Hankins in Putnam Co, FL in 1941 and records show they lived in St Augustine through 1949. He was a driver at the NAS in Jacksonville.
