Obituary in the Junction City Tribune, c. May, 1880 (My copy does not have the date of the obituary; Obtained Feb 2007 from Lydia at Dorothy Bramlage Public Library, 230 West Seventh, Junction City, Kansas 66441; (785) 238-4311):

DIED.
McVAY--At his residence in this county, on
Monday, May 3, after a long and serious
illness, with consumption. Lafayette Mc-
Vay, aged twenty-four years.

The funeral services were conducted
by Rev. Zimmerman of this city, on
Tuesday, in the presence of a large audi-
ence of earnestly sympathizing friends
and neighbors, and the remains were in-
terred in the Morris Cemetery on Lyons
creek. The deceased leaves a wife and
two children to mourn their irreparable
loss.

----------------------------

The Wreford Cemetery at the time of Lafayette's death was known as "the Morris Cemetery on Lyons creek" (per his obituary in the Junction City Tribune). I take the date of his burial from the obituary as well, which identifies his funeral as occurring on "Tuesday." So Lafayette died on Monday, May 3 and was eulogized and, presumably, buried on Tuesday, May 4.

While 24 seems a terribly young age to die, seven of Thomas Patterson McVay and Henrietta West McVay's thirteen children died at a younger age than did Lafayette.
