Stephen was the son of Thomas & Joane Dummer.

Early History and the Dummer Name -

The Dummer name originates with the Village of Dummer in northern Hampshire that takes its name from the Old English words "Dun" (hill) and "Mer" (lake or water). There is to-day a hill known as Dummer Hill, but there is no lake or pond. It has been suggested that perhaps the pond dried up long ago. The earliest people bearing the Dummer name used it in the form "de Dummer" (or Domer, Dumer, etc.) to mean "from Dummer". For example, Geoffrey de Dummer was "Geoffrey from Dummer" to distinguish himself from other Geoffreys.

Stephen married Alice Archer in Hunton, Hampshsire, England, 13 Nov. 1625.

Stephen and Alice immigrated to Newbury in 1638 where Stephen's older brother Richard had settled. Here he was made a freeman, May 1639. Stephen Dummer was one of the most wealthy of the grantees, 386 acres of land being granted to him, according to the rule agreed upon in London by the assistants of the company who settled Massachusetts; they gave to every adventurer 200 acres for every 50 pounds he put in common stock in the company. in 1647, Stephen and his family, with the exception of his oldest daughter, Jane, who had married Henry Sewall, returned to England and remained there claiming the New England climate did not agree with them. Henry Short, his agent in America, sold the Dummer farm at the Birchen meadows at Newbury, containing 300 acres for 31pounds.
