He died in action during the Seminole War at Indian Key, Florida.

He was the son of William Davidson Jr. and Jinny Davison Davidson.
He was married to Elizabeth Chapman Hunter, daughter of General John Chapman Hunter.
They were the parents of Brevet Major General John "Black Jack" Davidson, United States Army; Cmdr. Hunter Davidson, CSN; Charles Davidson and Roger Davidson.
Later, Elizabeth Hunter Davidson married a Dr. Pope and lived in Georgia.

His son, Hunter Davidson, was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy. During the Civil War Hunter Davidson was the Confederate officer in charge of armament when the CSS Virginia engaged with the USS Monitor in 1862.
