Mr. Marvis Williams, age 99, of Northfield, passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2009 at the Northfield Care Center.

Marvis was born on May 10, 1910 in Artesian, SD to David and Jessie (Hughes) Williams. He graduated from Artesian High School and South Dakota State College where he earned distinction in both singles and doubles men's tennis.

While serving in the US Army Air Force during WWII, he met and married Leona Shallbetter. After discharge, Marvis worked briefly at the UofM before accepting a job at Carleton College in 1946. He retired from Carleton in 1975.

Marvis was a member and Past President of the Northfield Lions Club. He was also a 50-year member and Past Master of Social Lodge #48, as well as a Past Patron of Sheba Chapter, OES and Past Commander of Faribault Commandery No 8 Knights Templar. He also was a member of the Osman Shrine, Corinthian Chapter #33 of the Royal Arch Masons, and Northfield Council No. 12. He was an avid reader, cribbage player, and golfer, and loved listening to music.

Marvis is survived by his daughter, Mary Williams of Eagan; granddaughter, Mona Barrada of Bloomington, MN; and nephews David (and Karen) Catey of Moxee, WA and Gerald Hoy of Lewiston, ID. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Leona, sister Marguerite Catey, half-brothers Lloyd and Harlyn Hoy, and nephews Alan Catey and Gordon Hoy.

Visitation will be held at the Bierman Funeral Home on Friday, July 24 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM with a Masonic service at 6:30 PM. The funeral will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 25 at the Northfield United Methodist Church with visitation an hour before the service. Full military rites will be conducted at the church. Burial will take place in the Glenwood Cemetery in Mankato. Memorials to the American Cancer Society or the Northfield United Methodist Church
