George Washington Bassett, Jr., was born at Lake City, Florida on December 25, 1884, and then moved with his family to Palatka, Florida, where he attended school.

Bassett was a Midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy in 1901-02, but left Annapolis due to ill health. He was later appointed to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, but in 1904 he enlisted in the U.S. Army 111th Coast Artillery Corps instead. In the Army, Bassett rose to the rank of Quartermaster Sergeant before his discharge in 1907.

After leaving the Army, Bassett worked as a civilian Assistant Construction Engineer in the Army Quartermaster's Department, was in the insurance business in Tampa, and then as a legal stenographer in Palatka. While still in the Army Bassett had begun the study of law and was admitted to the Florida Bar in June of 1912. After working in Palatka for several years, he moved his law practice to Saint Augustine in January of 1915.

Bassett was appointed a Major in the Judge Advocate General's Department in 1917 and served as Staff Judge Advocate for the Florida National Guard. Bassett continued his service as the Florida National Guard State Staff Judge Advocate, re-appointed as a Captain in May of 1921 (it was not unusual for officers to be reduced in rank following the end of World War I). He received a promotion to Major in 1924 and continued to serve as State Staff Judge Advocate until 1932.

In addition to his law practice, Bassett became the Mayor of Saint Augustine in January of 1929.

Major Bassett died at Key West Barracks on August 17, 1932, while attending Annual Training with the 265th Coast Artillery, Florida National Guard. He is buried in the National Cemetery at the Post of Saint Augustine.
