Swan A. Holstein, 101, formerly of Minden, died Friday, June 7, 1996, at Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at May Cemetery east of Minden with the American legion Post 94 Commander Jack Yant officiating. Layton Funeral Home of Minden is in charge of arrangements.
He was born June 3, 1895, to Axel and Mathilda (Olson) Holstein in Juniata. In 1905, he moved with his family to a homestead near Norman, where he lived and worked.
On May 10, 1917, he entered the U.S. Army. He served during World War I.
On March 16, 1921, he married Violet Estergard. He lived for 47 years in Arkansas, Florida, California, Utah, Nevada and Arizona.
He was a member of the American Legion post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and Trench Rats. On Aug. 19, 1994, he received an award from the French government for his involvement in the war.
Survivors include his daughter Marjorie TroBaugh Mickelson, North Platte; sons, Stanley, Grand Island, and Roger, North Platte; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, three sisters and a granddaughter.

The metal marker says "Holstein" and his obituary also does, even though he shares a stone with Axel Holsten and his parents' and siblings names in the obit are all Holsten. No explanation unless it is a double error.
